The lynx (Lynx lynx) was eradicated across large parts of Central and Western Europe around 1850. There are several species of lynx throughout the world, but the Eurasian lynx is the one whose huge range extends across most of Europe, including Germany. The Eurasian lynx still survives in populations in Eastern and North Europe and in Northern Asia.

Il était considéré comme nuisible et sa fourrure était très recherchée. L‘acceptation actuelle du lynx et le renouvellement de son habitat naturel ont permis son retour. Néanmoins, du fait de son comportement et de ses capacités de dispersion limitées, il n‘est pas en mesure de recoloniser de lui-même de nouveaux territoires.
